Encouraging Attendance
When solving a problem it is always crucial to find the root. The first step in solving attendance problems is understanding or discovering the reason why a student is missing classes including the frequency. When it has been understood why a child is missing we can take the appropriate steps to remove or reduce the underlying reason. Some problems may not be possible to solve such as child with an illness that must miss school on a regular basis. At that time the next step to helping that child would be reducing the negative impacts of missing class.
SOUND & REASONABLE ATTENDANCE POLICIES
Provide students with incentive and understanding to encourage better attendance is important as well as appropriate consequences when they do not. Make attendance a priority for the entire school!

Early & Targeted Intervention
Early intervention is extremely important to ensure that students will not continue or get caught in a cycle of absenteeism. Early intervention must include guardians of a child including teachers, administration, parents/guardians to ensure everyone works as a unified front to make changes. The sooner that the intervention occurs in their school career and within the year the better. The first step is unlocking the reason why a student is missing school to better provide a personalized response. Do NOT forget to ask and include the student from the very beginning.

Increase School Engagement & Personalization
Make school a place that students have a strong desire to be at! Include activities within the classroom and in clubs that the student can connect with and feel that they are part of the community. Ensure the child is encouraged to join activities that have meaning and include a personal investment. Using programs like mentoring can also encourage a child to make changes within their attendance rate.

Include Family to Improve Parental Mindset
Every school should prioritize including parents within their school community through using open communication between home and school. Making use of things like classroom websites, remind 101, open school days, parent-teacher interviews and inviting parents to help out and get involved will increase parental support/prioritization of schooling. Just as we use personal connections to engage students and show them the importance of school educators can use this to connect parents with education. This becomes even more important when students are not attending school particularly if family issues are part of the reason.
